Burning Plain

The name of the director of this film, Guillermo Arriaga, sounds familiar? Not surprising, since this renowned scenarist wrote the scenarios for all Alejandro González Inárritu’s films, such as Amores Perros, 21 Grams, and Babel.

In his first feature film, Guillermo Arriaga explores a very specific genre, one he has used in his former films: a frame story that mingles past and present.

He filmed The Burning Plain in New Mexico, in the Chihuahua Desert, and on the wild coast of Oregon. According to Arriaga, these two regions reflect the characters and contribute to the plot of the film.

Everything begins when a caravan mysteriously explodes. Inside, Gina and her secret lover, Nick, perish. Some 15 years later, in Portland, Sylvia, a lost young woman that goes from one romantic conquest to another, is pursued by a strange man... The stories of two women that intersect through time, as lives are entwined and emotions stirred...

Charlize Theron and Kim Basinger feature in a film for the first time (although they never appear together). Both make a wonderfully touching performance, which contributes to the balance and the sobriety of the film. Elegance mixes with duress in this captivating and wonderfully staged story. The physical sensation that will take hold of you gradually while watching this movie will stay with you for a long time...
